At the ESA Living Planet Symposium 2025 in Vienna, LUISA will present its work through an 80-minute tutorial session, “Continental Demonstrator LUISA project: Human Appropriation of Net Primary Production Tutorial”.
This hands-on session, convened by Wai-Tim Ng from VITO, will introduce participants to both the HANPP concept and the project’s user-friendly platform.
The symposium’s theme, “From Observation to Climate Action and Sustainability for Earth,” aligns perfectly with LUISA’s mission. With approximately 6,000 participants from up to 92 countries expected to attend, the tutorial offers an excellent opportunity to share LUISA’s continental monitoring framework with the global Earth observation community.
What is HANPP?
Every year, plants across Africa capture carbon from the atmosphere and convert it into biomass through photosynthesis. This is called Net Primary Productivity (NPP). HANPP compares how much productivity remains after human activities like harvesting crops or clearing forests, with what would naturally exist if the land were left undisturbed.
This comparison reveals very important insights for future, efficient, sustainable measures. High HANPP values indicate intensive land use that might be pushing ecosystems beyond their limits. Lower values suggest more sustainable practices that leave room for natural processes to continue.
